The military focused on internal guerrilla operations rather than all-out war with an enemy ready for combined warfare. KMAG advisers remained with their units and played an important role in rebuilding and expanding the army during the war.
Counselors often lived, worked and ate at their host unit to train them, often cut off from their own supplies. Individual initiative played an incredible role in preparing units for combat in the short time they were often given for training.
The war was the catalyst that made the Army of the Republika Srpska an effective fighting force, with the help of the KMAG playing a major role in keeping the army intact and creating a basis for growth as the war continued.
The first days of the KMAG project were carried out without any institutional basis; the organization is hidden in so many words. This "Wild West" approach depended on innovation and the relationship the newly formed Korean units cultivated with their American advisers.

Advisors worked closely with their receiving units up to and including combat situations. Creating the Korean army proved difficult at times. The use of various military terms was often outside the scope of the language. Terms like "machine gun" and "farm" didn't really exist, so they had to be improvised.
Weapons also proved to be a problem. At first, many Korean units were armed with Japanese weapons left over from the occupation. After the end of World War II and the introduction of the Truman Doctrine, US advisory committees became the new norm for achieving foreign policy goals. Later, the Soviet Union began to use consultants as a tool to bring revolution to post-colonial countries.
Advisory boards became official delegations of the state, designed to assist and communicate the principles each practiced. Advisers became another factor in the proxy wars waged by the Soviets and Americans. Each side had distinct differences in how they approached the mission, and these methods affected the overall success or failure of the mission.
In many ways, the American experience in Afghanistan mirrors previous advisory missions. Building a school system and building an army and police force from remnants of the Republic of Afghanistan and fighters from the Northern Alliance resembled the experience of the KMAG in the late 1940s.
However, there were significant challenges impeding American efforts that often mirrored the Soviet experience and differed from KMAG's. First there was the religious tension and the Islamist nature of the conflict. Another was the complete lack of nationalism that ran through the ROK forces.

One of the most important developments revealed by the reports is the need for Soviet advisers to learn the language, Portuguese.
This was key to developing the personal relationships they noted were essential in their work. The Cubans were highly valued and had excellent cooperation with Angola and the Soviets. The language barrier was much less for the Cuban soldiers because of the similarities between Spanish and Portuguese.

Consultants must be able to improvise in order to move towards a successful project. This does not mean that sending poorly trained consultants is acceptable. Indeed, counselors need a solid foundation of training in the language, culture, and history of their host countries.

The Cuban/Soviet effort in Angola mirrored other advisory missions on the continent, with the Cubans providing troops for more difficult operations, while the Soviets provided technical advice and guidance to local forces. After independence in 1975, Soviet advisers numbered around 400.[viii] Once there, the Soviets tried to gain control of the airlift that supplied the MPLA with their equipment, including trying to secure an airfield for the transports to land on;
the Angolans refused this. In addition, nearly 15,000 Cuban soldiers entered in the late 1970s, mainly to supply trained troops with various types of Soviet equipment.[ik] The original Soviet advisers wore plain Cuban uniforms and lived in relative luxury when they undertook the work.

Before World War I, German missions were best described as "semi-official". By exporting the German military system, the economic benefits of arms sales could contribute to the success of these projects.
Most of the officers were contractors and were paid by the host country. The loss in 1918 did little to diminish the star that many developing countries saw in the German system. Although Germany was officially not allowed to send any officers abroad, many newly recruited officers accepted employment as contractors in countries such as Nationalist China, Afghanistan, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Both officers were less contractors and more full-time in their host organizations. Kund was involved in the modernization of the Bolivian army before the First World War. the Battle of Cuito Cuanavala in continuous combat that lasted from August 1987 to March 1988. The Cubans were again at full strength by providing air force against the South Africans. The South African Defense Force (SADF) inflicted heavy losses on the Angolans in late 1987. Soviet advisers were often alone with minimal protection on the ground, at one point damaging their APCs to disappear on foot after the destruction of FAPLA's 47th Division on 14 October 1987.
.[kiv] The battle lasted for months, until the SADF concluded that it was little more than a stalemate. The presence of almost 25,000 Cubans and their equipment made victory impossible. This eventually led to the end of the conflict.
